Antitumour Activity of Lactic Acid Bacteria

  • Chapter
Book cover Probiotics 3

Abstract

Since ancient times, lactic acid bacteria have influenced human dietary habitats. The products fermented by the bacteria are consumed in many different forms. Metchnikoff proposed beneficial effects from the consumption of fermented milk products such as yoghurt on human health at the beginning of the 20th century. Since this time, studies have demonstrated that lactic acid bacteria inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract, together and with various other microorganisms form on intestinal microflora, which affects physiological functions in the host. It has gradually become clear that the intestinal microflora have both negative and positive effects on human health, however, lactic acid bacteria are beneficial to human health.
