Abstract
Originally it was thought that probiotics operated solely by modifying the composition or activity of the gut microflora. More recent research has shown that there is also an effect on the immune system. The knowledge of the role played by the gut flora in stimulation of the secretory immune system and functioning of the immune system as a whole is essential for the successuful development of probiotics for use in farm animals and human beings.
