Abstract

Lamont-Doherty seismologists are engaged in field measurement programs in Alaska, California and China related to the prediction of earthquakes through the acquisition of crustal deformation data. In many of the programs we have identified measurement problems that we have attempted to solve by the development and deployment of suitable instrumentation. In the following report we mention some of the more interesting recent results from these programs and dwell on the qualities of new instruments and techniques that we are presently developing. These include sea level monitoring instruments, borehole pressure gauges, a hydrostatic level for use in vertical geodesy, long-baseline water tube tiltmeters and a subsurface radar-profiling system used for locating and mapping active faults.
