Abstract

L. serricorne or E. elutella infesting tobacco are killed by temperature treatments (Chapter 5) or fumigation. Fumigants are gases which penetrate the tobacco mass and, when used correctly, kill 100% of all life-stages of the insects within. Only two true fumigants are used: phosphine, and to a lesser and declining extent, methyl bromide,82 although, other fumigants have been used.83 Fumigation by controlling the basic atmospheric components is used on a small scale. Therefore, we will deal with phosphine in detail and then show how it differs from the other fumigants.
