Abstract
The first printed circuits were developed over 50 years ago in the United States during the Second World War and were designed to reduce weight, save space and increase reliability in military equipment. This new technology replaced discrete wiring of electrical components which was previously accomplished by the use of terminal boards and point-to-point wiring and soldering. With the widespread commercialization of the transistor from the 1950s onwards the demand for printed circuit boards began to expand significantly. The world consumption of printed circuit board laminate materials for 1998 has been estimated at around 225 million square metres!
