Abstract
With respect to water supply systems optimization, mathematical models of a vast variety are available in the literature. It seems this had limited impact upon solving the problem in practice. Sponsored by the German Science Foundation an attempt was made for remedy. Cost optimal design models of urban and regional water supply systems were devised for developing countries where they are most needed. The programs were implemented and verified in planning situations. They include both layout and design optimization. Different algorithms had to be employed in conjunction, including graph theory, linear programming and a ‘genetic’ random search. As a result, in the opinion of the author, water supply pipe line systems optimization has been made available for practical application.
