Physiological Responses of Vascular Plants to Heavy Metals

  • Chapter

Abstract

Toxic heavy metals entering the plant tissues inhibit most physiological processes at all levels of metabolism. The inhibition of growth, photosynthesis, ion and water uptake and nitrate assimilation etc. have been described in many papers. The extent of these effects is greatly dependent on the concentration of the metal ions and the sensitivity or tolerance of the plant. Therefore the concentration is a key factor in interpreting metal actions. Another widely discussed question is the specific symptoms of heavy metal toxicity which is extremely hard to separate from those of other simultaneously affecting or consequently induced stresses.
