Abstract

Commercial logging operations have almost come to an end in the old-growth dipterocarp forests in the Philippines. In the region of Cagayan in Northern Luzon, the site of this study, there were 28 logging concessions covering 1.16 million hectares in 1987, but by 1995 these had shrunk to only five concessions covering 0.31 million hectares (DENR 1996). Some big problems and questions have arisen because of these changes, including who will manage the logged-over secondary forests and how they will be managed.
