Abstract

Vietnam’s forestry sector has undergone large changes over the last decade under the country’s Doi Moi reforms. These have made significant progress, not only in food production and changes in the make-up of flora in the mountain areas but have also resulted in a recovery in forest resources, damaged by a combination of war, industrial forestry, and poverty over the last few decades. In recent years, the country’s forest area has rapidly increased in both quantity and quality because of the institution of new forestry policies. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, by the end of 1999 the total forest area in Vietnam was 10.9 million hectares, or about 33.2 percent of the total natural area, including 9.4 million hectares of natural forest and 1.5 million hectares of production forest (MARD 2000).
