Abstract
Russia is a presidential republic whose constitution is strongly influenced by those of France and the USA. The Head of State, the President, is a dominant actor within the executive. He or she is directly elected for a four-year term, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. In addition to wide appointing powers the president is responsible for directing state action, in particular in foreign and military matters.
