Abstract
The Vth Republic dates from 4 October 1958 and is semi-presidential. The President is Head of State, and has since 1962 been directly elected for a seven year term. He or she holds considerable power: appoints and dismisses officials, including the Prime Minister; communicates independently with parliament; and can call national referendums.
