Abstract

The genus Cymbidium includes forty-four species, and is distributed from northwestern India to China, and Japan, South through the Malay Archipelago to Northern and Eastern Australia (Du Puy and Cribb, 1988). Asian cymbidiums are generally classified into temperate oriental and tropical cymbidiums. Tropical cymbidiums include orchids from Southern and Northeastern India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines. Temperate oriental cymbidiums (Fig. 5-1 –5-5) include species native to China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. These orchids differ not only in their origin but also in esthetic value and methods of appreciation and selection of cultivars. Traditionally growers in some parts of the orient have cultivated oriental orchids, especially Cymbidium species, rather than their tropical counterparts. However, it is very difficult to distinguish taxonomically between temperate oriental and subtropical or tropical Cymbidium species.
