Abstract
What are the prospects for a solution? To answer this question one must bear in mind: (i) the internal conditions of Eire and how the Republic can help in achieving a solution, (ii) the internal conditions of Northern Ireland, (iii) the political and economic situation of Great Britain and therefore, which way the London government can move, and wishes to move, in the quest for a solution. In view of the weakness of the Republic in comparison with the United Kingdom, the potential contribution of the former is doubtless the least important.
