Abstract
Isolation and a peripheral situation are two typical features of the Irish environment, both from a physical and a social viewpoint. Great Britain itself, though far larger (229,897 square kilometres in comparison with 84,403 of Ireland) and better accessible from the continent, existed in a somewhat peripheral condition until the Discovery of America.
