Abstract
At Knoxville, the first author assessed some aspects of the structure and functioning of root nodules in an evolutionary context. Here we re-assess some of these aspects and add some new ideas, consistent with recently published data. Our overall aim is to define the constraints on nitrogen-fixing symbioses with angiosperms over time, beginning at the Upper Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary (the last 100Ma) and projecting into the near future.
