Abstract

Cytokines are soluble, secreted glycoproteins that, like hormones, regulate the functions of cells and tissues. Many cytokines possess therapeutic properties and attempts to produce them in large quantities are ongoing. Transgenic plants are one system that has the potential to yield large amounts of low cost recombinant proteins. In addition, plants have the ability to introduce post-translational modifications needed for biological activity of many cytokines. In this review, we describe the efforts aimed at producing recombinant cytokines in plants and discuss some of the issues that have arisen from such activities.
