Abstract

Polyamines (PAs) are small aliphatic amines with two or more amine groups; they are ubiquitous in all living organisms. The main naturally occurring PAs in plants are the diamines diaminopropane (Dap) and putrescine (Put), the triamine spermidine (Spd) and the tetramine spermine (Spm) (Fig. 5.1). The cationic nature of PAs (they are highly protonated at physiological pH), explains the electrostatic binding in vitro and in vivo to negatively charged nucleic acids, phospholipids, cell wall components and many types of proteins, including enzymes whose activities are directly modulated by PA binding (Morgan, 1987). Also, PAs covalently bind to the free carboxyl groups of glutamate residues in proteins. Covalent linkage of PAs to proteins is post-translational and it is catalyzed by transglutaminases (Serafini-Fracassini et al., 1995). All the above interactions are important in regulating the structure and function of biological macromolecules and also their biosynthesis (Bouchereau et al., 1999 and references therein).
