Abstract

A sampling probe for sterile process applications, e.g. for bioreactors, has been developed. The innovation is an arrangement of microelectrodes on a silicon chip to generate an electrical AC field. In the bioreactor microorganisms or cells are polarized and repelled from the surface by means of the AC field.

The sample is pumped through slits between the electrodes. The adhesion of cells on a sterile filter membrane, arranged behind the chip, can be avoided.

Electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) was used to characterise topographical as well as electrical properties of the electrode arrays.
