Abstract
During the late ‘40s and ‘50s modified versions of the German V-2, Viking and Navy Aerobee rockets were launched from White Sands, New Mexico, USA to study the atmosphere. The first known photographs of the Earth’s cloud cover taken at an altitude of 110–165 km from a V-2 rocket were reported in 1947.
