Abstract

In recent years mesoscale rainbands have been under intensive research. For example, the papers by Houze et al. (1976), Hobbs (1978), Matejka et al. (1980) and Browning and Mason (1981) thoroughly describe the structure of precipitation in extratropical cyclones. However, there is a gap in our knowledge concerning wintertime cyclones where precipitation is totally in the form of ice crystals, i.e., snow. This is probably due to the fact that few weather radar facilities suitable for research purposes exist in areas where snowfall is frequent. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is situated at 60°N and snowfall can usually be observed from November to April.
