Abstract
The period of High Economic Growth which began in the latter half of the 1950s led to a massive migration of population from rural to urban areas in Japan. The population concentration into Tokyo was particularly noteworthy. Accompanying this economic growth was a rapid expansion of urban zones into the surrounding area. However, the first oil crisis of 1973 severely weakened this process, and the pace of subsequent land use changes declined sharply.
