Abstract
The inexorable drive towards corporate alliances may represent a new chapter in the development of capitalism. Many industries that were not so when the original “rules of competition” were being written have become international in scope—pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, electronics, information-processing, telecommunications, petrochemicals, and many others. Meanwhile economic maturity in the home markets of key players within these global industries has forced these firms’ managers to balance their entrepreneurial orientations with strategies for survival amidst economic downsizings and changes in their nations’ industrial bases.
