Abstract

Under the chairmanship of Prof. Jean Chatelain, persons active in the field of organizing international temporary exhibitions presented their points of view and studied various issues raised by the organization of such events, particularly with regard to insurance questions.* Mr. Jean Louis Chauchat explained the concerns of an insurer vis-à-vis State guarantees and emphasized the lack of dialogue between insurance companies and public authorities (see infra, pp. 425–430). Ms. Beverly Wolff gave her point of view as a museum legal counsel and proposed the adoption of an international treaty for the unification of conditions of coverage by governmental indemnification insurance (see infra, pp. 445–448). She also pointed out the need to improve co-operation between lenders of works of art and organizers of international temporary exhibitions. Mr. Hans-Ewald Schneider discussed questions of transportation, as weil as the customs and safety issues related to the organization of international temporary exhibitions (see infra, pp 449–454). He expressed concerns about the plans of the European Commission to add specific administrative requirements for customs documentation in 1993, which would increase the bureaucratic formalities to be applied to the exportation of works of art.
