KoMoD: A constraint-based design support system for mechanical engineering

  • Conference paper
Integration of Process Knowledge into Design Support Systems

Abstract

The CAD/CAM systems are widely used nowadays in the mechanical field. Howewer, these systems work almost only with geometric information, whereas design aid facilities, representation and reuse of the designer’s know-how are not taken into account yet. This article deals with KoMoD, a constraint based design support system for mechanical engineering. KoMoD allows the representation of a class of products and the explicitation of the design process. The family of products is described via a meta-model based on view-points, constraints and meta-constraints. We express knowledge explicitly and specially options and consistency by using meta-constraints as hyper-links on and between viewpoints. In fine, our models are implemented with constraint programming techniques A prototype has been developped for redesign problems where a knowledge engineer should represent product knowledge and design process knowledge. After that, designers should use the application built as a design support system to instantiate artefacts. Our purpose is illustrated by mechanical examples.
