Control of engineering processes through integration of design activities and product knowledge

Integration of Process Knowledge into Design Support Systems

Abstract

Within the frame of the development of GRAI methodology in the Concurrent Engineering domain, we propose to model jointly and simultaneously engineering activities and product. From an extension of GRAI nets to represent and pilot engineering activities, we model their nature (design, execution, decision) and their logic succession in the development process. For the description and the management of product knowledge, we use a model based on the concepts of functions and technological entities.

This integrated modelling of both process and product provides a representation of the progress of the project. It allows to follow the work performed, the elaboration of activity programs and their triggering. It also enables the control of the engineering processes in order to satisfy the customer requirements and the objectives of enterprise.
