Abstract
Now-a-days, companies have to face individual customer demands and rapid technological changes. Beside the fulfilment of quality and cost requirements companies are forced to realise a shortened time-to-market to maintain and increase competitiveness. One approach to meet these requirements is Simultaneous Engineering, the integrated and time parallel design of products and processes.
Design activities can be described as formulating and solving of constraints. Constraints define and bound the solution space for the design problem. Existing constraint systems are restricted to areas with precise design parameters. However, especially in the early phases of product and process development, parameter values as well as parameter relations are characterised by a high level of imprecision and uncertainty.
In this paper the combination of constraint satisfaction technique and fuzzy set theory resulting in Fuzzy Constraint Networks is described. Its applicability is illustrated in a case study concerning the configuration of a wind turbine.
