Abstract

Ethylene (C2H4) is the simplest olefin and exists in the gaseous state under normal physiological conditions; it regulates many aspects of plant growth, development and senescence and its effects are commercially important (Yang and Hoffman, 1984). Some of the physiological processes influenced by ethylene are release of seed, bud dormancy, seedling etiolation, seedling and stem growth, flower and fruit initiation, fruit growth and ripening and promotion of leaf, flower and fruit abscission (Devlin and Witham, 1983).
