Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to review research on experimental induction of haploids in tree species since the pioneering efforts of LaRue and coworkers in the late fifties. Initially, however, we shall discuss some features of trees affecting haploid research, and give a brief outline of male and female gametophyte development in vivo, to set the stage for subsequent discussion on in vitro culture of these structures. The reader is also referred to Chen (1986, 1987), Rohr (1987), Bonga et al. (1988), Von Aderkas and Dawkins (1993) for recent reviews on haploidy in trees, and Singh (1978), Konar and Moitra (1980), Owens and Blake (1985), Pennell (1988), Sedgley and Griffin (1989), Blackmore and Knox (1990) for a fuller discussion of the development of reproductive structures of trees in vivo.
