The Extended Structure of Phoenix Dwarf Galaxy

Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics III

Abstract

At the decade of 50’s, Baade found an extended structure of reddish stars in a series of deep red plates of the IC1613 dwarf galaxy. Later on designed as the Baade’s sheet (Sandage 1971), it was interpreted to be formed by stars from an underlying Population II. Nowadays, extended structures have been routinely found in several dwarf galaxies: WLM (Minniti & Zijlstra 1996), NGC 3109 (Minniti, Zijlstra, Alonso 1999), Phoenix (Martínez-Delgado, Gallart, Aparicio 1999), and DDO 187 (Aparicio, Tikhonov, Karachentsev 2000).
