Abstract
In recent years, the advent of new infrared (IR) facilities (both space and ground based) with superb spatial resolution and sensitivity has allowed to make significant progress on our understanding of the IR properties of Seyfert (Sy) galaxies. In this paper, we briefly summarize recent results obtained by our group on the IR properties (1 – 15 μm) of Sy galaxies. The IR emission in AGNs (Sy 1 galaxies and radio quiet quasars) has been often interpreted as produced by a torus dust configuration heated by the central source. However, until recently, the nuclear non-stellar IR continuum in Sy 2 galaxies had eluded us because of the dominance of the stellar emission up to 2 μm (e.g. Alonso-Herrero et al. 2000, and references therein).
