Abstract
The magnetohydrodynamic modes of oscillation of a force-free, sheared coronal arcade are investigated. The approach is to consider the general equations for this type of equilibrium and then to introduce small perturbations. The linearised momentum equation then results in two coupled partial differential equations for the velocity components in the directions normal and perpendicular to the equilibrium magnetic field. A numerical code is used to solve the resulting system of coupled partial differential equations and its accuracy has been checked by numerically solving a case for which analytical or simple numerical solutions exist.
