The near-IR Ca II Triplet: Empirical Calibration and Stellar Populations Synthesis Models

Abstract

We present a new stellar library of 706 stars in the near-infrared spectral region (λλλ8348–9020 Å, FWHM = 1.5 Å) covering a wide range of atmospheric parameters. The library is developed for the empirical calibration of the Ca II triplet and stellar populations synthesis modeling. We conclude that the Can strength saturates for stellar populations with [Fe/H] > −0.5, showing a mild dependence on metallicity but a very strong sensitivity to the initial mass function.
