Abstract
The general objective of this paper is to define the problem areas linked to the specification and overall consistency of a dimensioning diagram and to propose a solution principle to solve this problem.
Firstly, we will analyse and propose a solution to the question of the overall consistency of the dimensioning diagram of a mechanical part.
In particular, we will show the importance of a specification which is too often implicit - that of the dimension of space.
This will be shown by the existence of decline constraints which will be expressed according to two mathematical formalisms, one linked to volume or hypervolume calculation and the other to the utilisation of the metric tensor.
And, it is by satisfying these decline constraints that we will be able to guarantee the consistency of a dimensioning diagram.
Different vectorial, tensorial and affine expressions of dimensioning and geometric tolerancing will be examined in detail and compared.
Finally, we will consider the transposition of this consistency analysis to a tolerancing diagram; the problem posed, as well as some elements of solution, will be covered in detail.
