Abstract

A numerical transport simulator, combining a steady state flow model and a conservative particle tracking scheme, is used as a quick look tool for ranking stochastic images. Two conservative mass transport algorithms are considered, one based on a semi analytical technique (Pollock, 1988) used in the standard MODPATH (Pollock, 1994) software and the other one based on a node to node tracking algorithm (Desbarats, 1990). The tool is tested in a 3D case, based on a channelized oil reservoir. Results show that, due to artificial dispersion of the node to node algorithm, the rank given by the two particle tracking schemes are different and seems to be more definite for the Pollock scheme. But, when both are compared to the results given by a multiphase flow model, the node to node looks more effective to rank stochastic realizations than the Pollock method.
