Abstract

I first met Fred Hoyle in the summer of 1967 as a visitor to the brand new Institute of Theoretical Astronomy IOTA, the precursor to the Institute of Astronomy. Fred had invited me to spend the summer in Cambridge at the suggestion of Peter Strittmatter. Although I was not working on either nuclear astrophysics or cosmology, his major research topics at the time, Fred took an interest in my work on interstellar molecules and we developed a friendship. His interests were very broad and he asked me to organize a meeting at the institute in 1969 on the then new topic of infrared astronomy.
