Impact and Fatigue

  • Chapter

Abstract

In the previous chapters the theories and micromechanisms of crack initiation and propagation in polymers have been reviewed and discussed. A recurring theme has been the often dominating influence of the time-temperature-dependent behaviour of polymeric materials upon both the mechanics and mechanisms of fracture. This aspect is amplified in the present chapter which describes the general behaviour of polymers under three types of loading condition which embrace the complete spectrum of time-scales encountered in service applications, namely: impact, dynamic fatigue and static fatigue.
