Abstract

In this paper I want to look at the conclusions one can draw from raising constructions about the relative position and nature of clause-level consituents in the Philippine languages. My data is largely taken from Cebuano (Bell 1979), Kapampangan (Richards 1971, Rowsell 1983), and Tagalog (Dell 1981, Kroeger 1993). The more familiar type of raising, out of a finite embedded clause, is usually considered to be Subject Raising.

I am grateful to Resty M. Cena, Chris Manning, Maria-Eugenia Nifio, Christine Poulin, Emily Sityar and one anonymous reviewer for comments and suggestions. In the glosses, ‘DatV’ abbreviates ‘Dative Voice’; other voices are ‘Act(or)V(oice)’, ‘Obj(ective)V(oice)’ and ‘Loc(ative)V(oice)’. LNK stands for ‘linker’, and ‘=’ marks a clitic-host boundary.
