Malagasy Existentials: A Syntactic Account of Specificity

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Studies in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory ((SNLT,volume 49))

Abstract

Since Milsark (1974), existential sentences have been the centre of much debate. (1) – (4) illustrate typical examples in English (SVO) and Malagasy (VOS).1.2

This paper has benefitted from discussion with Mark Baker, Hidekazu Tanaka and Lisa Travis, as well as participants at AFLA-2 and an anonymous reviewer. I would also like to thank Michèle Rahatovonony for the Malagasy data. All errors are my own responsibility. Research for this paper was funded in part by a grant (FCAR 94ER0578) to Lisa Travis and a Hydro Québec Award to the author, for which I am grateful.
