Abstract
Eighty-four actinomycete strains were isolated from soil and screened for antibiosis against a range of organisms and their ability to degrade chitin. The most potent producers of chitinase, including those which displayed antibiosis, were cultured in solid state fermentation (SSF) on crudely purified chitin. Strain abu, identified as Streptopmyces sp. was chosen for further work in SSF due to its ability to produce chitinase and antibiotic in solid state. Moisture content, particle size, substrate thickness and agitation for SSF of Streptomyces sp. abu were optimised for use as a model system in the solid state degradation of crustacean shell waste.
