Abstract

This chapter will attempt to describe the implications for the Netherlands of membership of the European Communities from both political and economic standpoints. Because of limitations of space, it has proved necessary to restrict discussion on many items and, unfortunately, to omit others altogether. Thus it has proved impossible to say anything about the Dutch position on regional or social policy, on energy or development aid. The inclusion of such issues would undoubtedly have provided a more rounded picture of the Netherlands’ role within the Communities but it would have been at the expense of what this author, at least, felt to have been more central concerns.
