Abstract

Science progresses like a spiral along the axis of time, sometimes revisiting earlier ideas at other times and locations, looking at old concepts from different angles. Some ideas erected at a later level of the spiral may be better formulated than their predecessors. This, however, should not make us forget the original ideas and their creators.

...ideas are not carried in our genes. They are carried in our heads, and they are subject to shuffling, revision, and adaptive modification. Like breeding stock in domesticated plants and animals, ideas may be selected artificially and deliberately’.
