Abstract

Water mites were investigated in four Polish national parks, representing different types of landscape: one mountainous, one upland and two lowland parks. A total number of 220 water mite species was found. Faunas of lowland and mountainous parks constitute about 70% and 14% of the total number of species found in the whole Polish lowland and mountainous area, respectively. In the lowland parks there were eurytopic species of broad geographical distribution. The species more specialised ecologically and of narrower geographical distribution play a more important role in the mountainous areas. It is hypothesised that the structure of water mite zoocoenoses is closely connected with the degree of stability of their habitats.
