Backwarming Effect of Molecular Opacities on the Infrared Colours of Very Cool White Dwarfs

  • Conference paper
Dust and Molecules in Evolved Stars

Abstract

Recent observations of intrinsically faint objects have increased the number of very cool white dwarfs. Photometry as well as spectroscopy by Ruiz et al. (1992, 1997) and Bergeron et al. (1997) revealed a variety of spectral shapes ranging from pure continuum to broadened and shifted features of hydrogen, neutral helium or of carbon bands if their identification was possible. Some objects show strange depressions of infrared colours which could not be accurately reproduced by hotter model atmospheres and quasicontinuous spectra.
