Abstract
The dot notation is a logical symbolism in which the function of brackets is performed by dots, and the number of dots determines the force of binding. The notation was introduced by Peano (1889) while its dissemination is due to Principia. The brackets can also appear but only as the index of the weakest linking, e.g. in formulae with double negation, like ~ (~ p), or with identity, like ~ (x = x).
