Abstract
Among angiosperms the stigma and the style function as gatekeepers for reproduction. Their role is to discriminate between pollen from different sources, facilitating fertilization by desirable types, and preventing fertilization by undesirable types. In this context, desirable pollen means pollen which is likely to give rise to vigorous progeny; whereas undesirable pollen would give rise to progeny with lower fitness. For example, fertilization by interspecific pollen could result in a sterile hybrid and self-fertilization may result in inbreeding depression. Thus, there is a window of genetic relatedness for optimum mating. Recognition is required for the pistil to discriminate among different types of pollen.
