Abstract

The great botanist Hofmeister (1849) was the first to gave a comprehensive picture of the sexual process based on the study of 30 species belonging to 19 genera of angiosperms. He described pollen germination on the stigma and the possible participation of pollen tube in fertilization, using live materials (Orchis and Gymnadenia). However, he adhered to the opinion that “the male fertilizing element” penetrated into an egg cell by diffusion. Horkel (1836), Schleiden (1837, 1839) and Schacht (1859), who were keen pollination biologists, believed that embryo arose from the tip of a pollen tube. However, in 1856 they admitted that this idea was erroneous.
