Synopsis
The traditional fullness index exhibits many of the same undesirable features as the gonosomatic index. A recently proposed alternative is examined and refined. This alternative estimates the values for full stomachs at all lengths of a species from the maximum gut content masses observed when the data are sorted by the lengths of the fish from which they were taken. The actual gut content mass of each fish is then expressed as the proportion of the maximum amount expected for a fish of that size. This technique is flexible enough to be used for a variety of patterns of change in gut content mass with growth.
