Summary
Taiwan, the Republic of China, the island of Formosa, is not a member of the United Nations. It retained the name and the claim to represent all China when the Nationalist (Kuomintang) government retreated from mainland China in 1949. It held the seat of China in the United Nations and other international bodies until 1971, when the government of the People’s Republic of China was recognized as the government of China by the United Nations.
