Abstract
To compile the Autecological Accounts presented in this book, four principal sources of information have been employed: vegetation surveys, other field observations, laboratory screening experiments and published sources. The first three originate from Sheffield, but in quantity of data the Accounts are dominated by the findings of just one of these: information from a vegetation survey performed in the Sheffield region by UCPE and hitherto unpublished. Most of the material given here is therefore new. This chapter provides background information on all of these principal sources of information. Chapter 6 provides tables of synopses of these data, not only for the species dealt with in the Accounts themselves but also for others which are important in the British flora.
