Abstract
In the context of the coastal circulation problem, ‘transient’ currents will be taken to mean wind-induced motions of a time scale much longer than f −1, but shorter than the time in which bottom friction comes to control the pattern of flow. The foregoing three chapters have developed simple theoretical models for gaining physical insight into the structure and dynamics of such transient currents. In the present chapter an attempt will be made to connect the theoretical results quantitatively to observational evidence.
